Consideration

Consideration is what each party gives in return for the other's promise — usually payment, goods or services. In England and Wales a promise is only enforceable as a contract if it is supported by consideration or made by deed.

It need not be adequate, only something of value: a nominal £1 can be enough.

In Scotland

Scots law does not require consideration. A gratuitous promise can be binding, although one made other than in the course of business must be in writing.
