ATAS certificates
The Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) applies to some international students who want to study sensitive technology-related subjects at master's level or above in the UK. Most undergraduates do not need one, but some integrated master's degrees do.

Who needs one
ATAS applies to courses at RQF level 7 or above (master's level) in certain subjects, usually in science, engineering and technology. Those applying for an undergraduate course with an integrated master's year, such as some MEng or MPhys degrees, may also need ATAS clearance. Your university will tell you, and your CAS says if you need one.
Who is exempt
You do not need an ATAS certificate if you are a national of Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, the Republic of Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, South Korea, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland or the United States, or if you have indefinite leave to remain.
How long it takes
Applications take at least 30 working days (about 6 weeks), and some take longer, so apply as soon as your university gives you the course details. You need the certificate before you apply for your visa.

ATAS is run by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. You apply online, using the course and subject code your university gives you.
