Is plug-in solar legal in Northern Ireland?
Not yet in practice. The Energy Saving Trust says plug-in solar panels are not currently permitted for use in Northern Ireland and may follow once regulations are updated. The connection changes in the 2026 regulations extend only to England, Wales and Scotland, and the government specification notes that Northern Ireland's connection rules are set separately and that applying the specification there needs further consideration.
Can I still install rooftop solar in Northern Ireland?
Yes, through the normal route: a qualified installer connects the system, and it must be agreed with or notified to the network operator, NIE Networks. Planning is devolved to Northern Ireland's councils, so ask your local council whether permission is needed for your installation.
Is VAT charged on solar panels in Northern Ireland?
The 0% rate on the installation of energy-saving materials, including solar panels, has applied in Northern Ireland since 1 May 2023 and is scheduled to run until 31 March 2027, when the reduced 5% rate is due to return unless the relief is extended.
NIE Networks runs the electricity distribution network in Northern Ireland, separate from the Great Britain network operators. Connection requirements for small generators in Northern Ireland are set separately, under Engineering Recommendation G98/NI, rather than the Great Britain G98.
