Do I need to notify my network operator about a home battery?

Yes. Network operators treat a battery as demand when it imports from the network and as generation when it exports, so the G98 and G99 connection rules apply. Where G98 applies you submit Form B within 28 days of installation. Where G99 applies, including installations over 3.68 kW with storage, you need to apply before installing.

Is VAT charged on home batteries?

Batteries installed with solar are zero-rated, and since 1 February 2024 a standalone or retrofit battery added to an existing system also qualifies, under the same time-limited relief that is scheduled to run to 31 March 2027. As with panels, the relief applies to installation rather than to materials alone.

What should I check before installing a home battery?

Use a qualified, appropriately certified installer and make sure the network notification is made. Tell your insurer, follow the manufacturer's and building-safety guidance on where the battery is sited, and check the warranty for capacity and cycle guarantees. Compare the cost against the savings you can realistically make from your tariff.
