In Aug 2014 Tesla extended the 85 kWh Model S drivetrain warranty to 8 years/unlimited miles to match the battery warranty, retroactively (TechCrunch, 15 Aug 2014). ev-database: Long Range (2019-20) 8 yrs/150,000 mi; no data for 75D. Terms for 60/70 kWh cars: not confirmed.
Does the warranty transfer?
Tesla UK: warranty follows the vehicle when ownership transfer is completed through Tesla. Remaining time on older cars depends on first delivery date - many 2014-2018 cars are now outside the 8-year term.
Known issues to check
- Driving Electric (21 Jul 2021): door handles that fail to extend; brake judder from worn discs ('disappointingly common'); erratic lights/wipers; electrical glitches affecting infotainment and climate; body repairs costly and slow (few accredited centres); recalls for seatbelt pre-tensioners (2015), parking brake (2017), airbags (2018, 2019), steering power-assist bolts (2018).

Before you buy
- Get an independent battery health (state of health) report, or ask the seller for a recent one
- Check how much battery warranty is left (years and miles from first registration) and whether it transfers to you
- For a Renault Zoe or early Nissan Leaf, check whether the battery is owned or hired
- Check recalls on GOV.UK and that any battery recall work has been done
- Check the MOT history and mileage on GOV.UK
- Check the rapid-charging plug (CCS or CHAdeMO) and that rapid charging is fitted at all
- Make sure both charging cables are with the car
- Ask for the service history: some warranties need servicing on time
- Test drive from a full charge and watch the range estimate and any warnings
- Remember the Electric Car Grant is for new cars only
