Used Renault Zoe: what to check

Check whether the battery is owned (an "i" in the name on the V5C) or hired monthly. Many ZE40 cars cannot rapid charge. Years covered: 2013 to 2024.

Typical asking prices: About £4,400 (2014) to £12,800 (2023) (average asking prices on AutoUncle UK, 8 to 15 October 2026). Prices vary with mileage, battery and condition.

Versions and battery sizes

Launched UK June 2013 (Driving Electric). ev-database order dates: Q210 (22 kWh) Mar 2013-Jan 2017; R240 Jun 2015-Jan 2017; ZE40 R90/Q90 Feb 2017-Mar 2018; R110 ZE40 Mar 2018-Dec 2019; ZE50 R110 Jan 2020-Jun 2022; ZE50 R135 Jan 2020-May 2024.

Batteries

'22 kWh' pack: 25.9 kWh gross / 23.3 kWh usable; ZE40: 44.1 gross / 41.0 usable; ZE50: 54.7 gross / 52.0 usable (ev-database.org/uk).

Real-world range

ev-database EVDB real range: Q210 85 mi (combined cold 70, mild 100); R240 90 mi; ZE40 150-155 mi (R90 ZE40: combined cold 130, mild 180); ZE50 R110 195 mi; ZE50 R135 190 mi (combined cold 160, mild 220).

Charging

AC: up to 22 kW on 3-phase (Renault 'Chameleon' charger); ev-database notes most homes are limited to 7.4 kW. DC: 22 kWh Q210 and ZE40 'Q90' versions could rapid-charge on AC at 43 kW (ev-database: Q210 max 43 kW, 10-80% avg 33 kW); R-motor ZE40 cars (R90/R110) have no rapid charging ('Rapid charging is not possible' - ev-database). ZE50 (2020-on): CCS listed as an option, max 46 kW DC, 10-80% avg 41 kW.

Battery warranty

Renault UK warranty documents (owned-battery 'i' versions only): ZOE i registered before 1 Mar 2020: 8 years/100,000 miles, 66% minimum capacity; ZOE i registered from 1 Mar 2020: 8 yrs/100,000 miles with capacity thresholds Year 1-3 80%, Year 4-5 70%, Year 6-8 66%; Zoe E-Tech electric registered from 1 Jul 2020: 8 yrs/100,000 miles, Years 1-3 80% / Years 4-8 70%. Where the battery is leased, separate lease terms apply. Renault's French-oriented guide (10 Feb 2019) says leased batteries are guaranteed at 75% of initial capacity for up to 10 years from first registration, then 60%; Go Green Autos (updated 19 Oct 2024) gives the same 75%/60% for UK leases.

Does the warranty transfer?

Renault UK warranty terms state: 'Transfer of ownership of the Vehicle does not alter the terms and conditions of the Warranty.'

Battery hire

Renault UK introduced battery 'Full Purchase' (badged ZOE i, and marked on the V5C) alongside Battery Hire on 27 Nov 2014 (EV Fleet World). Renault dropped battery leasing for new Zoes in late 2019 (Autocar; Driving Electric). Lease administrator: RCI Financial Services, now Mobilize Financial Services (Go Green Autos, updated 19 Oct 2024; Autodoc, updated 9 Sep 2026). Monthly fees: £49-£110 depending on term, battery and mileage (Driving Electric, 2023); Go Green Autos: from £49/month incl. VAT. Buyout: Go Green Autos says owners can buy the battery from RCI/Mobilize at any time (allowed from March 2020), price depending on battery age, e.g. £2,600-£2,800 for a 2015 22 kWh pack in 2021, and about £2,000-£2,500 as of Oct 2024; Autodoc (9 Sep 2026) reports a minimum buyout of about £2,000-£2,500 but its figures are internally inconsistent - get a written quote from Mobilize. Transfer: the lease does not pass automatically; the buyer takes out their own agreement (Battery Transfer Hire Document, credit check, Direct Debit) and the seller should not hand over the car until Mobilize confirms (Autodoc; Go Green Autos). Check: V5C model name containing 'i' (e.g. 'Zoe i') indicates factory-owned battery; an HPI/finance check can show a Mobilize agreement. Go Green Autos says that once bought out, battery warranty reverts to the original new-car terms, typically 5 years, so older packs have no cover (not confirmed by Renault). Mobilize contact given by Go Green Autos: electricvehicles@mobilize-fs.com, 0330 3310 220 (not independently confirmed; mobilize-fs.co.uk/battery-hire returned 'Temporarily Unavailable' on 16 Oct 2026).

Known issues to check

  • Battery hire (lease): many earlier Zoes were sold without the battery, which is leased monthly - see battery_lease_note.
  • Euro NCAP awarded the Zoe zero stars on 10 Dec 2021, citing the facelift's downgrade from head-and-thorax to thorax-only side airbags, weak driver chest protection and lack of standard AEB/lane assist (Autovista24). Electrifying flags the crash rating as a concern for cars from 2020 onwards.
  • Many R-motor ZE40 cars have no rapid charging at all; on ZE50 cars CCS rapid charging was an option, so check the car has it (ev-database).
  • Driving Electric (17 Aug 2023): no spare wheel (sealant kit only); rattles sometimes traced to bootlid lock/hinges; five recalls on Mk1 cars (brakes, parking brake, accelerator pedal, front wheel hubs). Check recall status on GOV.UK.
  • Electrifying: ex-fleet, council or rental cars may show scuffs and poor body repairs; check all charge cables are present.

Asking prices in detail

AutoUncle UK (last updated 15 Oct 2026): overall £4,842-£12,990, median £9,995. Average asking price by year: 2014 £4,358; 2015 £4,580; 2016 £5,984; 2017 £4,856; 2018 £4,748; 2019 £6,933; 2020 £8,890; 2021 £9,571; 2022 £11,349; 2023 £12,774. AutoUncle does not separate leased-battery from owned-battery cars. Motoring Research (5 Aug 2026): 'from £3,500'. Prices differ significantly between leased-battery and owned-battery cars (Electrifying).

Before you buy

  • Get an independent battery health (state of health) report, or ask the seller for a recent one
  • Check how much battery warranty is left (years and miles from first registration) and whether it transfers to you
  • For a Renault Zoe or early Nissan Leaf, check whether the battery is owned or hired
  • Check recalls on GOV.UK and that any battery recall work has been done
  • Check the MOT history and mileage on GOV.UK
  • Check the rapid-charging plug (CCS or CHAdeMO) and that rapid charging is fitted at all
  • Make sure both charging cables are with the car
  • Ask for the service history: some warranties need servicing on time
  • Test drive from a full charge and watch the range estimate and any warnings
  • Remember the Electric Car Grant is for new cars only
