Used Nissan Leaf: what to check
The cheapest way into an EV. No liquid battery cooling and CHAdeMO rapid charging; the 40 and 62 kWh cars make most sense. Years covered: 2011 to 2024 (first and second generation).
Typical asking prices: Average asking prices about £3,500 (2015) to £13,100 (2024 cars) (average asking prices on AutoUncle UK, 8 to 15 October 2026). Prices vary with mileage, battery and condition.
Versions and battery sizes
Gen 1: 24 kWh available to order Mar 2011-Jun 2013 (Japanese-built) and Sep 2015-Feb 2018 (MY14-17); 30 kWh Sep 2015-Feb 2018. Gen 2: 40 kWh Feb 2018-Dec 2024 (two listings: Feb 2018-Mar 2022 and Mar 2022-Dec 2024); e+ 62 kWh Jun 2019-May 2023. (ev-database.org/uk listing dates.) UK 30 kWh sales began Dec 2015 (Fleet News). A new, CCS-equipped third-generation Leaf (52/75 kWh) is on sale from Nov 2025 and is not covered here.
Batteries
24 kWh gross / 22.0 kWh usable (estimate); 30 kWh gross / 28.0 usable; 40 kWh gross / 39.0 usable; 62 kWh gross / 59.0 usable (ev-database.org/uk).
Real-world range
ev-database EVDB real range: 24 kWh (MY11-13) 75 mi (cold combined 65, mild combined 90); 24 kWh (MY14-17) 80 mi; 30 kWh 105 mi (cold 90, mild 120); 40 kWh 145 mi (cold combined 120, mild combined 170); e+ 62 kWh 210 mi (cold combined 180, mild combined 245).
Charging
AC: 24/30 kWh cars 3.3 kW standard with optional 6.6 kW on-board charger, Type 1 inlet; 40 and 62 kWh cars 6.6 kW, Type 2 inlet. DC: CHAdeMO on all versions listed by ev-database (Electrifying notes some rare Visia models lack it). Peak DC per ev-database: 24 kWh 46 kW (10-80% average 34 kW); 30 kWh 47 kW (avg 45 kW); 40 kWh 46 kW (avg 40 kW); e+ 62 kWh 46 kW (avg 44 kW).
Battery warranty
Nissan UK (current warranty page): 'Pre MY22 Leaf: 5 years warranty or until 60,000 miles'; 'MY22 Leaf ... 8 years warranty or until 100,000 miles'; the battery state-of-health guarantee covers capacity loss to fewer than 9 of 12 bars on the in-car capacity gauge; for LEAF Flex (battery-lease) customers the SoH guarantee applies for the duration of the lease. CONFLICT: Fleet News (Sep 2015) reported the 30 kWh Leaf's capacity covered by an 8-year/100,000-mile warranty, and ev-database lists 8 yrs/100,000 mi for the 30, 40 and 62 kWh versions; Electrifying's used review (24 Jan 2024) says 24/30 kWh: 5 yrs/100,000 miles and 40/62 kWh: 8 years. Original 2013 European enhancement (Nissan press release 7 Jun 2013): 9-of-12-bars capacity cover for 5 years/100,000 km. Buyers should confirm the terms for the specific car with a Nissan dealer.
Battery hire
Some early Leafs were sold as 'Flex' with a leased battery; Electrifying says most have been released but buyers should check. Nissan UK says the SoH guarantee for Flex customers runs for the duration of the battery lease.
Known issues to check
- No active (liquid) battery temperature management; repeated rapid charging on one journey can slow charging ('rapidgate'), reported on the 2018 40 kWh Leaf with speeds dropping to about 25 kW; Nissan said the slowdown protects the battery (electrive.com, 8 Apr 2018). Electrifying also notes the 40 kWh car 'doesn't like rapid charging after a long motorway run'.
- Uses CHAdeMO for rapid charging, which is uncommon on new European EVs; Allego stopped installing new CHAdeMO units in 2023, while InstaVolt said in Sept 2026 that it will keep at least one CHAdeMO connector at every site (electrive.com, 25 Sep 2026).
- Battery degradation is shown by the 12-bar capacity gauge; Electrifying says losing one or two bars after 60,000+ miles is normal and that the Leaf battery 'does degrade faster than more modern electric cars'.
- Electrifying lists: missing nav SD cards (dealer-programmed replacements are costly), expensive replacement keys, water ingress from poor windscreen repairs damaging control units; and 'Flex' cars linked to a battery-lease scheme (most released, but check).
- What Car? used review (2018-2024 Leaf) reports a mixed reliability record with electrical issues, warning lights and a recurring charging-system fault mentioned by owners.

Before you buy
- Get an independent battery health (state of health) report, or ask the seller for a recent one
- Check how much battery warranty is left (years and miles from first registration) and whether it transfers to you
- For a Renault Zoe or early Nissan Leaf, check whether the battery is owned or hired
- Check recalls on GOV.UK and that any battery recall work has been done
- Check the MOT history and mileage on GOV.UK
- Check the rapid-charging plug (CCS or CHAdeMO) and that rapid charging is fitted at all
- Make sure both charging cables are with the car
- Ask for the service history: some warranties need servicing on time
- Test drive from a full charge and watch the range estimate and any warnings
- Remember the Electric Car Grant is for new cars only
