How to choose
- Fixed window or smart control? Fixed-window tariffs give a cheap rate at set hours for the whole home. "Intelligent" tariffs control the charger or car and may charge outside the window.
- Check compatibility. Some tariffs need a particular car, charger or app. Most need a smart meter sending half-hourly readings.
- Look at the day rate. If you use a lot of electricity during the day, a higher day rate can cancel some of the saving.
- Exit fees. Some fixed tariffs charge to leave early.

Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest EV tariff in the UK?
At our 16 October 2026 check the lowest off-peak price we found was 6.18p per kWh (EDF Pod Point Plug & Power). The cheapest for you depends on your region, your car and charger, and how much electricity you use in the day.
Do I need a smart meter for an EV tariff?
Almost always. Time-of-use tariffs need a smart meter that sends half-hourly readings so the supplier can bill the cheap hours.
How much does it cost to charge an EV at home?
At an off-peak rate of about 7p to 9.5p per kWh, an average EV costs roughly 2p to 3p a mile to charge at home, against about 26.32p per kWh on the standard price cap.
