Are EV batteries a fire risk?

Any lithium-ion battery can, rarely, suffer thermal runaway, a chain reaction in a damaged or faulty cell that produces heat and can cause fire. The question for buyers is how likely that is and how to reduce it.

What the evidence suggests

Available fire-service and insurer data suggests fires are less common per vehicle in EVs than in petrol and diesel cars. However, EV fires can be harder to extinguish and may reignite, and long-term data is still limited. Treat any single statistic with caution and look at the source and how it was measured.

Does battery type matter?

LFP cells are more thermally stable than nickel-based cells, which makes them less prone to overheating. That is a genuine advantage, but no chemistry is risk-free: pack design, cooling, battery management and crash protection all matter. See our battery types guide.

Reducing the risk at home

  • Use a qualified electrician to install a home charger, and a reputable charger.
  • Avoid extension leads, and stop using any damaged cable, plug or socket.
  • Follow the manufacturer's charging guidance.
  • Do not keep charging a car that has been in a serious crash, or shows battery warnings, until it has been checked.
  • Ask your insurer whether it has conditions on charging or garaging.

In an emergency. If you see smoke or fire, hear hissing or notice a strong smell from a car battery, get everyone away from the vehicle and call 999. Tell them it is an electric vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

Are EV batteries a fire risk?

Any lithium-ion battery can, rarely, suffer thermal runaway if it is damaged or faulty. Published fire-service and insurer data suggests fires are less common per vehicle in EVs than in petrol and diesel cars, but EV fires can be harder to put out and may reignite. Evidence is still developing. Follow the manufacturer's charging guidance and use a qualified installer for home charging.

Are LFP batteries safer than NMC?

LFP cells are more thermally stable, which makes them less prone to overheating than nickel-based cells. That is a genuine advantage, but no battery type is risk-free, and pack design, cooling and crash protection matter too. Many manufacturers do not publish the chemistry for each trim, so ask the seller in writing.

How long do EV batteries last?

Batteries typically degrade slowly. Most manufacturers warrant them for at least eight years or 100,000 miles, usually to a minimum capacity of around 70 percent. Warrantywise reports that drive-battery problems do not feature among the five most common EV repair requests in its data, though that data covers used cars only.
