Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission (SCCRC)

The SCCRC is an independent public body that investigates possible miscarriages of justice in Scottish criminal convictions and sentences.

The Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission (SCCRC) was set up in April 1999 to review cases where a person believes they have been wrongly convicted or sentenced in Scotland. It can investigate cases from any Scottish criminal court. If it considers that there may have been a miscarriage of justice and that it is in the interests of justice to do so, it can refer the case to the High Court of Justiciary for a fresh appeal. The High Court then decides the appeal. People can apply themselves or through a solicitor. The SCCRC generally expects applicants to have used the normal appeal routes first, unless there is a good reason they did not. It is separate from the Criminal Cases Review Commission, which covers England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
