Released under investigation (RUI)

Released from the police station without charge and without bail conditions while police keep investigating. There is no set time limit.

Released under investigation (RUI) means police have let you go from the police station without charge and without bail, but the investigation into you is still open. You have no conditions to follow and no date to return, but you can still be charged later, invited to another interview, given an out-of-court outcome, or told there will be no further action. There is no legal time limit on how long someone can remain under investigation, and some cases take many months or longer. Police can arrest you again if new evidence appears. Since reforms in 2022, police should use pre-charge bail instead where it is necessary and proportionate, for example to protect a victim or witness. The outcome is often sent by post, sometimes as a postal requisition to attend court. A solicitor can contact the police to ask for updates on your behalf.
