Northern Ireland is treated separately from England, Wales and Scotland for electricity safety and connection rules. The 27 August 2026 plug-in solar change does not automatically apply here.

Plug-in solar
The Energy Saving Trust says plug-in solar panels are not currently permitted for use in Northern Ireland and may follow once regulations are updated. SI 2026/848 makes the connection change for England, Wales and Scotland only, and the government's product specification says Northern Ireland's connection rules are set separately (Engineering Recommendation G98/NI) and that applying the specification there needs further consideration. Do not plug a kit into a socket in Northern Ireland until the rules change. Check the Department for the Economy, NIE Networks and Consumer Council guidance for updates.
Rooftop and hardwired solar
Standard rooftop and hardwired systems remain available through qualified installers, and must be notified to the network operator, NIE Networks. Planning in Northern Ireland is devolved, so ask your local council whether permission is needed.
Export payments
The Smart Export Guarantee applies in Great Britain, not Northern Ireland. Ask your supplier what, if anything, they pay for exported power.
Renting
Check your tenancy or lease and ask the landlord in writing before fixing anything to external walls or balconies.
