Balcony solar in Germany (Balkonkraftwerk)
Germany is the model for plug-in solar in Europe. Since the Solarpaket I reform of May 2024, a plug-in system with an inverter of up to 800 W is simple to register and does not need an electrician for connection in the standard case.

The basic rules
- 800 W inverter cap. The limit applies to inverter AC output. Panel capacity can be higher, and a newer standard (DIN VDE V 0126-95, in effect from December 2025) sets a product framework, including limits when using a standard household plug.
- One registration. Register the system in the Marktstammdatenregister (MaStR) run by the Bundesnetzagentur, within one month of commissioning. The separate notification of the grid operator is no longer required.
- Standard plug. Systems can use a standard household plug (Schuko) if they meet the standard.
- Batteries. Adding storage is treated differently. Check the current rules and use a qualified electrician.
Tenants and owners
Since 17 October 2024 balcony solar has been a privileged measure under section 554 of the German Civil Code (and section 20 of the Wohnungseigentumsgesetz for owners), so landlords and owners' associations can generally refuse only where the alteration would be unreasonable for them. How and where you fix it still matters, and local rules can apply. Ask in writing and follow safe mounting instructions.
Tax
Solar panels and inverters for homes have been zero-rated for VAT in Germany since January 2023.
