Care and food
Give hamsters a large cage or enclosure with deep bedding for burrowing, hiding places, chew items and a wheel large enough for their back to stay straight. Feed a quality hamster mix with some fresh food, provide fresh water, and spot-clean daily. Avoid sudden disturbance during the day.
Character and suitability
Hamsters are nocturnal and active at night. Syrian hamsters are solitary and must live alone; dwarf species may sometimes live in pairs but often fight, so watch closely. Approach gently, let them wake up, and never handle a sleepy hamster.
Health and lifespan
Hamsters have short lives. Common problems include overgrown teeth, wet tail (serious diarrhoea, particularly in young hamsters), skin problems, tumours and respiratory infections. Watch for weight loss, lethargy or a wet, dirty rear end.
Allergies
Bedding dust and hamster dander can cause allergic reactions. Choose low-dust bedding and ask about allergies in the household.
The law in the UK
Hamsters are covered by animal welfare law, so owners must provide for their needs. Sales and breeding should be responsible, and pets should not be released into the wild.
What it costs
Budget for a large enclosure, wheel and accessories, food, bedding, and possible vet bills. Purchase costs are low, but exotic-animal vet care can be costly relative to the animal's lifespan.
Emergencies: when to call a vet
Seek veterinary advice quickly for wet tail, injury, not eating or drinking, breathing problems or swollen wounds. Because hamsters are small, illness can progress in a day or two.
Adopting or buying
Rescues sometimes have hamsters. If buying, choose a responsible breeder or shop, check that the animal is alert, clean and active in the evening, and avoid keeping unrelated hamsters together.
